Synchronous PV: a new generation of photovoltaic plants

Through the Synchronous PV Project, it is proposed the development of a new generation of photovoltaic plants that integrate naturally in the current electric systems, resembling and even improving, the behavior of conventional generators. Foto interior 1

The Synchronous PV project was born from the needs of R&D for the scaling of the Synchronous Power Controller (SPC), which is applied to power converters, to synchronous power generation plants.

The SPC is a controller that allows the performance of the power converters to improve by imitating the behavior of a synchronous machine through the emulation of output impedance and a synthetic inertia. The clustering of SPC converters constitutes power generation plants that may have a synchronous character. However, for this, it is necessary to develop a hierarchical control structure at the plant level that allows controlling and parameterizing the functions developed by the SPC converters in the different operating scenarios.

Through the Synchronous PV project the development of a new generation of photovoltaic plants is proposed that integrate naturally in the current electrical systems, resembling and even improving the behavior of conventional generators, so that they are able to overcome the limitations inherent to photovoltaic technology and facilitate the massive integration of renewables in current and future electricity networks.

With it, Abengoa focused on the development and validation of technical solutions for the integration of support functions to the grid in photovoltaic plants that, today, are provided by conventional centralized generators, selecting the most appropriate hardware platforms that meet the requirements considered as the basis of the development of the prototype for validation.

Thanks to this pilot project, Abengoa will be able to possess the necessary knowledge to address the development of virtually synchronous plants at commercial level in the near future.

Also, a simulation-based analysis was carried out to analyze the impact of the Synchronous PV plants on the electrical networks under high penetration scenarios and the potential economic benefit of the implementation of the services.Foto interior 2

Synchronous PV obtained a development of the control system of a photovoltaic plant virtually synchronous at laboratory level. Thanks to this pilot project Abengoa will be able to possess the necessary knowledge to approach the development of virtually synchronous plants at commercial level in the near future.
